Horseback riding at Saintes Maries de la Mer: the best site in the Camargue

Discover the Camargue on horseback

A horse born of foam, symbol of our wild region

The Camargue horse is one of the oldest horse breeds in the world. It has been present in the Rhône delta and its marshes since ancient times. It can be recognized by its white coat tending towards grey. Its instincts are infallible and its feet broad and sure.

This horse is also the emblem of Saintes-Maries-de-La-Mer and the symbol of the Camargue. According to legend, it was born from the foam of the sea. This white horse is said to have saved a man being chased by a bull by emerging from the foam, to prevent him from being swept away by the waves. He said to the man: "I will never be your slave, but your friend".

In the Camargue, this legend is preserved, as the horses live in semi-liberty, summer and winter alike. This type of breeding is the only one authorized in the Camargue.
