Comtois horse in Camargue
The Camargue is famous for its white horses and black bulls, but you may also come across a brown horse at the side of the road! It's a Comtois horse in Camargue. These horses are draught horses used to pull horse-drawn carriages! We'll tell you all about this type of horse and our carriage rides!

The Comtois horse in the Camargue
Imported into France in the 5th century, the Comtois is a draught horse named after its region of origin: Franche-Comté. This breed is the result of a cross between local horses and German horses. Today, this breed is found mainly in Switzerland and Burgundy. Its morphology differentiates it at a glance from the Camargue horse. With its brown coat, square head and muscular neck, it measures between 1.50m and 1.60m and weighs an average of 600kg. If you come across a Comtois horse in the Camargue, it's probably in front of a horse-drawn carriage. Reputed to be excellent workers, these horses are muscular enough to be harnessed at several hundred kilos.

Carriage rides in the Camargue
The Auberge Cavalière du Pont des Bannes offers horse-drawn carriage rides for groups or VIPs. These carriages are pulled by Comtois horses, or more precisely Comtoises! Our Comtoises are called Urphée, Flamette and Flore. They come straight from Switzerland, where they've been bred to work in the best possible conditions. We invite you to take a stroll through the Camargue countryside and discover our local culture. Charlotte, our stable manager, and her team are delighted to welcome these new mares to their team!
