Flamingo photography in the Camargue

Can't do without your camera when you travel? Is it a pretext for discovering towns or landscapes? The Camargue is a French region renowned for its light, colors, variety of scenery and unique ecosystem. Flamingos are the emblematic birds of our beautiful region, and they attract thousands of photo enthusiasts every year. Taking photos of flamingos in the Camargue appeals to passionate photographers. Why shouldn't you?

Flamingos, perfect photo models

Camargue pink flamingos - or Phoenicopterus roseus - are birds of the Phoenicopteridae family. They have a wingspan of between 1.20 and 1.50 meters. These birds have elongated bodies and long necks, and their long, curved beaks enable them to filter silt and water when feeding.

A rare bird in France found in the Camargue

Flamingos are not very common birds. They live in warm and temperate climates, but prefer to stay close to bodies of water: lakes, ponds, lagoons, or even the sea. The Camargue is a perfect place for them, as our region has plenty of fresh water and a large surface area of wetlands. 50,000 flamingos now live on the Mediterranean coast, representing 10% of the world population.

Taking photos of pink flamingos in the Camargue means, for example, capturing this Camargue pink flamingo in flight.

The color of flamingos: a gradation of colors

If taking photos of pink flamingos in the Camargue makes for sumptuous photo models, it's largely thanks to the color of their plumage. Flamingo feathers are pink thanks to the carotenoid pigments their bodies produce. Why are they pink? Because of the algae and crustaceans they eat. This color is not stable, and varies with the age of the bird. Baby flamingos have gray plumage. Adults get a white hue with gray tones on the back and wingtips. Older birds have brighter shades. Your photographs can therefore bear witness to this color gradation.

The Camargue marshes: an idyllic setting for working on your backgrounds... or other subjects!

The Camargue marshes are a photographer's paradise. An oasis surrounded by the sea, where fresh and salt water mix to create unique landscapes. And if the fauna is interesting, the flora is not to be outdone: 540 plant species have been recorded here, including 27 protected species. This variety of species is complemented by rich colors and interesting contrasts. The typical landscape of the Camargue marshes is made up of different shades of green, contrasting with areas where there is no vegetation at all. Or even white sands. You can also find black reeds in many places.

A few tips for successful photography

Take care not to frighten them: flamingos can be fearful creatures. So if you're lucky enough to spot a group of these magnificent birds in the wild, take your time and start shooting from a reassuring distance, before gradually moving closer so as not to alarm them.

No special equipment is needed to "capture" the pink flamingo.

With these rather peaceful birds, there's no need for an expensive telephoto lens. A simple 35mm or 50mm will suffice to take magnificent shots. Amateur photographers with a smartphone that's sufficiently advanced in terms of photography will even be able to enjoy themselves.

Where can you find pink flamingos in the Camargue?

They can be found just about everywhere in the Camargue. But if you want to get up close, we recommend a visit to one of our region's nature parks. Flamingos are quite shy, and if you get too close, they'll probably fly away. But if you approach them in a nature park like the Parc ornithologique du Pont de Gau, the flamingos are fed, so they're used to human proximity. And finally, if you're wondering where to stay to take photos of flamingos in the Camargue, and the many other exciting photo subjects... We'll be delighted to welcome youin our 4-star hotel, immersed in the heart of wild nature.
