Horseback riding on the beach in the Camargue, an accessible pleasure
The emblem of the Camargue, the wild white horse is a must-see during a stay in the Camargue. Would you like to discover this magnificent, authentic region? Take a horseback ride along the beach and discover unspoilt landscapes and exceptional wildlife.
The Camargue, land of wild horses
Considered one of the oldest breeds of horse, the Cheval Camargue is the emblem of the region. This magnificent horse, with its white coat tending towards grey, is as emblematic as the pink flamingos and the Camargue bull. For centuries, they have lived in semi-liberty in the marshes, in perfect harmony with the Mediterranean climate.
According to legend, the Camargue horse was born from the foam of the sea, offered by the god Neptune to a man pursued by a huge black bull in order to save him. In return, the man had to promise to let the horse free.
In 1837, King Louis-Philippe created the manade model, a free herd of Camargue horses led by a gardian. This type of breeding was intended to improve the breed, but was soon abandoned, only to be revived later.
Today, free-range breeding is mandatory to obtain the Cheval Camargue appellation. A manade must be at least 20 hectares in size, and contain at least 4 broodmares. In addition to their indispensable role in the Camargue ecosystem, Camargue Horses are the herdsmen's companions in leading the bulls. They are also leisure horses, playing a central role in the Camargue's equestrian activity.
Take a horseback ride on the beach during your stay in the Camargue
Horseback riding on the beach is one of the most emblematic activities not to be missed during a stay in the Camargue.
L'Auberge Cavalière du Pont des Bannes has its own stables and cavalry since 2019. Charlotte and her team offer horse or pony rides and carriage rides to discover the fauna and flora of the Camargue, as well as the magnificent beaches of the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer region.
You can choose between two types of horseback ride: the Terre et Marais ride, a 2-hour ride through the lagoons and marshes of the Camargue, and the Sunset ride, a 2.5-hour ride between land and sea, allowing you to admire the magnificent sunsets of this wild region.
Private 2-hour outings are also organized with an exclusive guide. Each tour is enjoyed by a small group of no more than 8 people, so you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the Camargue's natural setting.
